Pictures of Boston
   Photos from the Archives

Marguerite Krupp has been digging through the chapter archives and has found all kinds of
photos from the early days of the chapter. She has sent these along for inclusion in the chapter
web site. She also provides the following descriptions:

19thcartoon.jpg is a cartoon about the way the planning committee felt about the 19th
International Technical Communication Conference (1972), just before it happened.

67Bunnies1.jpg is a photo taken in 1967 at the Boston Chapter's annual end-of-the-season dinner
meeting, held (for the second consecutive year) at the Playboy Club in Boston.

67Bunnies3WithBP.jpg is the front page of the Boston Chapter newsletter, The Blue Pencil, for
March 1967, touting the upcoming June banquet and using a picture from the June 1966 banquet.
The contrast between the headline, with Chapter President (and later STC Fellow) Dave
Chestnut, and the picture is amazing.

67Bunny_2.jpg captures the - uh, spirit - of the evening.

72Exhibits.jpg shows the exhibits area at the 1972 (19th) Conference in Boston.

72GuardingProceedings.jpg shows the Marge Frith on the left and Planning Committee, Manager
Ed Stoddard at center, standing guard over the pile of hard-bound Proceedings of the 19th
International Technical Communication Conference. At that time, this was the only way we
distributed the Proceedings. I have the names of the rest of the folks at home.

72JudgingArt.jpg shows the team of judges for the 1972 International Technical Art Competition
hard at work.

72TechArt.jpg shows the display of the 1972 International Technical Art Competition Winners at
the Conference in Boston.

Comment from Anonymous: Composition is superb. The primitive use of contrast is compelling. The

subjects seem to say "Document this".

Comment from Jim Monahan: Thank God our profession has matured since those decadent 60s! The things we have learned since then! I think my fellow 21st century male tech writer counterparts have thrown off our chauvinist cloaks and know how to treat our female writers as equals.

Here's the deal, girls: we alternate years. One year at the Playboy Club, the next at a Chippendales-type place.

Wadd'ya think?

P.S. - Does the Playboy Club still exist? If not, all deals are off.
Comment from Bill Gruener: As a historical commentary, all the pictures from '67 record how we thought, felt, and acted--then. Today our annual outings are fun, and I hope, bias free and enjoyable to all, and I hope that our interests can be spicy at times but not in the profession or the workplace.
